Meet the author behind the stories

Discover the journey that led to Cullybooks.com. Learn about my passion for imagination, the inspiration behind my diverse range of books, and the engaging experiences I bring to every presentation.

From library shelves to published author

My journey into the world of books began with my mother, a librarian who ignited my love for reading and storytelling. Following in her footsteps, I became a librarian myself, where I cherished reading children's stories and soon began crafting my own. This passion led to "Festival of Books," a manuscript that took me to Australia to meet children who truly lived for reading. Upon retirement, my first children's book, "Cully's Quest," became a success, and the stories have blossomed ever since.

Igniting imagination: the power of "you can"

Through my books, whether they are about baseball, country music, or for children, I hope readers understand that they can achieve anything they desire, regardless of what others believe. As someone with dyslexia, I refuse to accept the word "can't." Whenever I hear "You can't do that," my mind simply responds, "Oh yeah, watch me!" No one truly knows their limits until they try.

Inspiring presentations that come alive

My presentations are far from ordinary; they truly come alive for the audience. Participants witness the fascinating development of a book, learning how personal experiences can transform into captivating stories. I emphasize how laughter enhances recall, making important messages memorable and impactful. My goal is for everyone to leave feeling inspired and connected to the power of storytelling.

Carl S. Birk - Cully the Storyteller

Carl Birk aka Cully the Storyteller is an award winning educator, author and storyteller. Born on August 16, 1958 in Fort Atkinson, Wisconsin, Carl is a graduate of the UW - Whitewater. He literally blew into Houston the day before Hurricane Alicea in 1983 and took on the librarian role for thirty three years in the Houston Independent School District honing his craft by writing stories that he read to students throughout those years. He racked up local and national awards including being the only person to be awarded Houston ISD Teacher of the Year (1990) and Houston ISD Librarian of the Year (2000). Carl resides in Houston with his wife.

Carl's family has been storytellers for nearly one thousand years. Since the time his family patriarch, Victor de Bard entered the court of William the Conqueror, storytelling has been handed down from generation to generation in his family. Victor's son Hugo, the storyteller for Richard the Lionhearted, even had a Scottish legend told of him (The Eagles of Auchmedden). Carl is just continuing his family tradition.

A surprising talent from Wisconsin

Here's a fun fact that often surprises people: I am bilingual! I speak English and... Cow. That's right, I can mimic a cow so authentically that real cows often turn around and even follow me. Coming from Wisconsin, perhaps it's not so unexpected! If you ask, I'd be glad to honor the request.
